OpenAI Codex usage limits explained
What OpenAI publishes about Codex limits on Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business, how credits extend them, and why Fast mode drains them faster.
Limits depend on the model
OpenAI publishes estimated local messages per five-hour period for Plus and Standard Business: 15-160 for GPT-6.1 Sol, 15-150 for GPT-6 Sol, 5-45 for GPT-6 Astra and 350-3,000 for GPT-6 Luna. Weekly limits may also apply. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit.
Local messages and cloud chats share one allowance, and cloud tasks may use more of it than local messages.
Plans
Free $0, Go $8/month, Plus $20/month, Pro at $100, $200 or $500/month (Ultrafast mode on the $500 plan), and Business at $25/user/month or $20 billed annually for 2+ users.
Fast modes cost more
Fast and Ultrafast use included limits faster than Standard: Fast uses 2.5x and Ultrafast 8x of included subscription usage, and 2x and 6x of purchased credits.
When you run out
Plus and Pro users can buy additional credits instead of upgrading; Business, Edu and Enterprise with flexible pricing buy workspace credits. Anyone can also run extra local chats with an API key at standard API rates. In the CLI, /status shows your remaining limits.
